Falconwood Carpet Cleaners Health and Safety Policy

Falconwood Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing carpet, upholstery and related cleaning services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and the general public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks, maintaining safe systems of work and complying with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards.

Policy Aims and Objectives

The primary aim of this policy is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property arising from our cleaning activities. We strive to create and maintain safe working conditions wherever our teams operate, including client homes, commercial premises, and communal areas. Our objectives are to identify hazards, assess risks, implement effective control measures and continually review our practices for improvement.

Management Responsibilities

The management of Falconwood Carpet Cleaners has overall responsibility for health and safety. Management will ensure that adequate resources are provided to implement this policy, including suitable equipment, cleaning products, personal protective equipment and training. Managers are responsible for promoting a positive safety culture, setting a good example, monitoring working practices and taking prompt action where health and safety standards fall short of expectations.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must follow the training and instructions provided, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate protective equipment and report any hazards, near misses, accidents or health concerns to their supervisor without delay. Employees are expected to cooperate fully with all health and safety arrangements and to refrain from any behaviour that could compromise safety on site.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Risk assessments are carried out for our typical carpet and upholstery cleaning tasks, including the use of machinery, handling of cleaning solutions, manual handling of equipment and working in client premises. Site specific checks are undertaken before work begins, taking into account access routes, trip hazards, electrical supply points, ventilation and any vulnerable persons present such as children, older people or pets.

Based on these assessments, we develop and follow safe systems of work. These include procedures for setting up equipment, using electrical machines, diluting and applying chemicals, handling waste water and leaving areas safe on completion. All staff are informed of these procedures and are required to follow them at all times.

Use of Chemicals and Hazardous Substances

Falconwood Carpet Cleaners uses cleaning products that are appropriate for professional carpet and upholstery cleaning. We obtain and follow the safety information provided by manufacturers and suppliers. Where substances are classified as hazardous, we carry out specific assessments and implement controls such as correct dilution, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, good ventilation and safe storage in vehicles or on site.

Chemicals are never decanted into unlabelled containers and are kept out of reach of children and pets while work is in progress. Staff are trained in the safe handling of all products, first aid measures in case of accidental contact and procedures for dealing with spills.

Equipment Safety and Maintenance

All cleaning equipment, including carpet cleaning machines, extraction units, vacuum cleaners and accessories, is selected with safety in mind and is maintained in good working order. Regular inspections are carried out to identify signs of wear, damage or malfunction. Defective equipment is removed from service until it has been repaired or replaced.

Electrical safety is a priority. Cables are routed to minimise trip risks, and staff are trained to check sockets, plugs and leads prior to use. Equipment is never used in a way that could expose it to water ingress or overloading of circuits. Only trained personnel are permitted to operate powered machinery.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

The movement of machines, hoses, water containers and accessories can present manual handling risks. Falconwood Carpet Cleaners provides training in safe lifting and carrying techniques, as well as planning of work to minimise unnecessary handling. Where possible, equipment is transported using wheels or trolleys and loads are broken down into manageable weights.

Staff are instructed to avoid awkward postures and to take short breaks where repetitive movements are involved, helping to reduce the risk of strains and other musculoskeletal issues.

Control of Slips, Trips and Falls

Wet floors, trailing hoses and power leads can cause slips and trips. During work, our teams position hoses and cables carefully, use warning signs where appropriate and communicate with occupants about temporary hazards. Any spills are cleaned promptly and work areas are kept as tidy as possible.

On completion of cleaning, all equipment and materials are removed, and surfaces are checked to ensure they are left in a safe condition. Clear information is provided to clients about drying times and any precautions that should be taken until carpets or upholstery are fully dry.

Protection of Clients, Occupants and the Public

Falconwood Carpet Cleaners recognises its responsibility to safeguard the health and safety of clients, building occupants and visitors while cleaning is carried out. Our staff are trained to be considerate and to plan work to minimise disruption and risk. Children and pets are kept away from work areas, and additional care is taken around individuals with allergies, respiratory conditions or reduced mobility.

Where necessary, we discuss any specific health concerns with clients before work begins and adapt our methods within reasonable limits to accommodate those needs, such as choosing low odour products or improving ventilation.

Training, Information and Supervision

All employees receive appropriate induction training on health and safety, safe use of equipment, handling of chemicals and emergency procedures. Ongoing training and refresher sessions are provided to maintain competence and introduce improvements in techniques and standards. Supervisors monitor work on site, provide guidance and address any unsafe practices immediately.

Health and safety information is communicated clearly to staff and, where relevant, to clients so that all parties understand the precautions being taken and the role they play in maintaining safety.

Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses are recorded and investigated to identify root causes and prevent recurrence. Staff are instructed in basic emergency procedures, including evacuation, first aid access and contacting emergency services where necessary.

In the event of an incident in a client property, our priority is to safeguard people, stabilise the situation as far as is safe and communicate transparently with the client. Follow up actions may include revising risk assessments, updating training and amending working practices.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

This Health and Safety Policy is monitored on an ongoing basis and formally reviewed at regular intervals, or sooner if there are significant changes in legislation, our services or working methods. Feedback from employees and clients is welcomed and used to improve our safety performance.

Falconwood Carpet Cleaners is committed to continual improvement in all aspects of health and safety, ensuring that our carpet and upholstery cleaning services are delivered safely, responsibly and with due care for everyone affected by our work.
